Bruce Richards' 6 Step Casting Diagnostic Method

Bruce Richards is a master casting instructor and FFF casting governor who designs all fly fines for 3M/Scientific Angler. He and mechanical engineering professor Noel Perkins developed the fly casting analyzer that is marketed by Sage Fly Rods.

Bruce is an innovative fly casting thinker and writer. His book, Modern Fly Lines, is the go-to tome on fly line design and construction. Find it in Lefty's Little Library.

About a decade ago, Bruce designed a 6-step method for diagnosing a casting inefficiency. It's a dual-part cause/cure concept, divided into 3 steps each. While it is intended to help a casting instructor diagnose problems, it is a useful self-diagnostics program, too. Better, get a casting buddy to look at your cast, then diagnose it using this method. Better still, video your cast and view it with an eye toward improvement.

The 6 steps analyze the cause of the problem from “top to bottom,” then recommends the cure of the problem from “bottom to top.”

Cause -- Line, Rod, Body
Step 1: Describe to the student what is wrong with the LINE.
Step 2: Explain what the ROD does to cause the line problem.
Step 3: Explain what the BODY (usually hand/wrist/arm) is doing to make the rod and line misbehave.

CURE -- Body, Rod, Line
Step 4: Explain what to do differently with the BODY.
Step 5: Describe what this makes the ROD do differently
Step 6: Describe what this affects the LINE to get the desired results.

Good information David!!

I have to confess, I have video taped my self casting to the camera. I took my golfing experience to the fly rod.

It was really simple and helpful. I would also like to take a side shot of myself but haven't gotten around to doing that.

Again, good thoughts David.
