Necessity is the mother of invention.

I have been tying the Kwan fly for years and I always fret over cutting the hackle collar when I'm trimming the yarn body. In a moment when I probably should have been paying attention while at work, my mind wondered about ways to hold the hackle out of the way. Like a ton of bricks, it hit me: "What about a drinking straw?"

I went to the kitchen drawer and grabbed a straw and headed to my vice. I tied on the tail and flash and then wrapped the collar over the tie in point for the tail. I then whip finished and cut the thread.

Now comes the part about using the drinking straw. I held the straw parallel to the shank of the hook. I then cut a part of straw that would cover the hackle but still be able to be slipped off the back of the fly for re-use in subsequent tying.

I slip the section of straw over the eye and then restart my thread.

I then push the straw section over the hackle and tie in the yarn and bead chain and then whip finish.

I trim the yarn body with no concern of clipping off any hackle.

When I feel that I've got the body the way I want it, I slip off the straw past the point. The straw section is ready for the next fly.

I hope that you find this tip helpful with other flies as well.

Thanks David. I did an instructional Kwan for the Feb 09 newsletter. I'll get thinking on some Fly Tying how-to's for 2011 Newsletters.
