I look forward to Shad fishing in the Winter almost as much as I look forward to tailing redfish in the Fall. I've been down a few times already this year to sample the water and it seems like the Shad are in. With the Shad outing next month, I thought I'd give a quick picture tutorial on the flies that I have been using.

Please understand that these are not the only flies that will work. Clousers work great but these flies are even easier to tie. In my opinion, you need to make sure that you have flies with two basic things: (1) lead eyes and (2) colors: Chartuse, Pink or Orange.

Again, I'm no expert but this has worked well for me over the last three Winters.

Hook: Must 34007 #6
Thread: Denier 210, your choice of color. White is fine.
Eyes: X-small lead dumbel eyes. I like the nickle plated for extra flash.
Tail: Your choice of flash. I like to use calftail or DNA holofusion.
Body: Chenille (medium) in either pink, chartuse or orange.

Below are some pictures.

Hey Bart,
Great flies! I really like the simple two step approach. I've chased shad on several rivers over the years and, while I too am no expert, I've noticed several things:
Shad like the flies small (usually)
Sparsely tied flies normally get more bites
Most experts say color doesn't matter, but when I tie tandem flies of different color, they often hit just one of the colors for awhile, then switch to another. Orange, chart, and pink work best for me also.

Years ago, we used to tie almost all our shad flies with silver bead chain eyes, floss tail, and chinille around the head. With the advent of new materials over the years we've progressed to great flies like yours. I'm gonna tie me some.

Lately, I've gone to Crazy Charlie style flies. I kind of like the way they "tickle" in the water to quote the Englishman Davy Wooten. They are three to four step flies depending on if you tie on a body material like mylar braid.

Hook: Daiichi X452 XPoint #8
Eyes: Med silver bead chain
Tail: Craft fur or marabou, or crystal flash
Body: Tying thread or any thin flash material like thin sparkel braid
Wing: Craft fur or marabou tied under (toward hook point)

Great flies, Don! I really have to get some #8 hooks and give your flies a try.

Thanks for posting your flies!
