I just received my Nove/Dec 2007 copy of “Fly Fishing in Salt Waters”. There was an article on their annual Art Gallery featuring fishing related artwork. One of the works was from our local artist, Vaughn Cochran. I’ve seen this picture in his shop many times and have always meant to tie one. The painting is simply called “Flats Fly”.

I tied Vaughn’s artistic fly with colors that I’ve recently been successful in catching redfish. Here’s my recipe:

Hook: #4 Mustad 34007
Thread: Denier 210, Brown
Tail: Light brown rabbit fur tied to the hook with two grizzly cre hackles tied on each side.
Collar: Light brown saddle hackle palmered around the tail tie in point
Head: Light brown natural deer body head, spun and clipped leaving the dark tips in place
Eyes: Small black bead chain

I think this might work well for a small crab or shrimp imitation, presented accordingly.

Bart

Brad.....it's not that difficult but I can best describe it while at the vice and taking pictures. I'll try to do something later in the weekend......I've got my fly tying stuff kinda packed down right now, I'm trying to make room to put a couple coats of finish on a fly rod I'm putting together.....
