Last evening, I went to the first of six fly tying classes put on by the club at the M & M Dairy on Wed 4/9.

Huge thanks to Mr.Doug Moore for allowing us to use his property and materials.

Jim McCully was instructing and gave the beginners a good intro to the types tools, materials (natural and artificial), colors and bouyancy of those materials, and tying styles (imitator and stimulator) involved with tying. He also gave tips on how to select certain materials. The tools and materials were provided for members to practice and apply some of these skills.

The veteran tiers (Dick Michaelson was assisting) went nice and slow demonstrating the use of a variety
of materials and techniques to tie a "Seaducer" pattern fly. See my attempt below. Then they let the beginners attempt to reproduce what we saw stage by stage. Remarkably, only a few tools were needed; we used a simple clamp vise, scissors, hackle pliers, bobbin and bodkin.

They also stressed thinking ahead before performing the step you are on so you "set things up" properly for the the next stage. If some thing was done improperly, we'd untie and redo it. It was cool to see a pile of feathers, thread and a hook transform.

What a nice group of mentors we have in this club.

See y'all next week.

Brad,

Welcome to the addiction of fly tying! Sounds like you had a great group of tyers to help you out.

I have been thinking of putting up a few tutorials of how I tie some of the common fly patters......Sea-ducer, clouser, etc.

The sea-ducer is a great shallow water redfish pattern. For around here, I tie mine in brown, black and cre or grizzly.

I've got to travel this week but I will get some things posted.

Bart

During the second evening of class we tied the "3M-Minnow" and "Clouser Minnow".
The "3M" stands for 3 colors of marabou. Jim likes the color combo of brown (or olive), purple, and white. He also adds a mallard feather on each side. I'm posting Jim's fly because when mine is dry looks like it went thru a blender (looks ok wet).

Fished in the pond with a "Wooly Bugger" and caught my 1st LM bass and a big chunky panfish who fought like he owned the joint !

See y'all next week.
