Hey -- I was finishing an article about tides when I thought the club members might benefit from the info I collected about tide programs.

These are 3 free tide and current programs: 1 downloads to your computer and goes for 10+ years (JTides), the other 2 compute on the web, but are printer friendly

In the past decade a few Internet tide programs have clearly outdistanced their competitors. All are free programs; one actually downloads to your computer.

NOAA Tides and Currents offers tidal data but also in-depth educational tools. Search the NOAA site below for ‘Tides Tutorial,’ then poke around the site for other very useful info.

Download the free careware ‘JTides’ from arachnoid.com for a computer resident program that lists tidal and current data set in a monthly format, or convert it to an Excel format. I printed tidal and sun-moon data through the year 2010.

By far the most usable, and most tweakable, tide program comes from the University of South Carolina Department of Biological Sciences.

What makes this program better? It offers daily, monthly, and yearly tide and related data in virtually any form. Tweak it for military time or 12-hour, sun and moon listings, show date and day of week; full monthly calendars, graphic lists or tabular plots; UTC or local times, and a choice of plot element colors for easy viewing.

The Univ. South Carolina program is based on David Flater’s excellent XTide program. The website is <http://tbone.biol.sc.edu/tide/tideshow.cgi>. Tide program runners-up are NOAA’s tide site <http://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/tides07/> and the careware download from JTides <http://www.arachnoid.com/JTides/index.html>.

Now, anybody witnessed the huge tides in the last three days. They show up nowhere in the tide programs and started before the minor NE-er. What's up?

David

If you look at the tide info on Jaxkayakfishing.com and choose Fort George Island from the drop down menu it show a 6.2 yesterday. That coupled with the NE winds really brought up the tides.

Thanks David! I was wondering what the deal was with this super high tide lately. Wasn't much beach left in your neighborhood Friday night.

We've traditionally viewed the Mayport tides in the Times Union as the benchmark to the tides. It was admitedly an arbitrary choice, but it became confusing due to all the different tide measuring locations for our area, that coupled with the fact that the tides are nearly a foot higher in Nassau County, made for confusing discussions in the early days. Since many of us fished the Valley for tailers, a mid-point choice for tides seemed right.

The benchmark for grass fishing tides used to be Mayport Ferry Dock at 5.4 feet above mlw, which was published in the paper.

Dick Michaelson has asked the Times-Union where they get their tide predictions and which location they are use. So far, no one seems to know. This as of June 17. Outdoor editor Jim Sutton says he's researching the issue.
