January 29 Shad Outing

We are Shad fishing South of Titusville, Fl. It is a 3 Hour drive so you can go down on Friday the 27th
or leave 5 AM on Saturday the 28th to meet up with Joe Shere . Joe is a friend of David Lambert and has
fished this area for years and will be our guide. Kayaks can be used, you will have to launch at Leroy
Wright Recreation Area at 8199 W. King St. Cocoa, Fl. With Kayaks you can go North from the ramp
and find some good fishing areas. Those who have power boats will launch at Lake Pointsett Lodge at
565 Lake Pointsett Rd. Cocoa, Fl. and we will fish farther to the South. There is a $5 charge to to launch
at Lake Pointsett ramp. We will fish about 4 miles South of the ramp. 5-7 wt. rods should be fine. If
the water is slow moving and shallow you can use a floating line. If the water is fast and deep water, you
need a sinking line.
Shad hold on the bottom so the fly has to have some weight. Cast you line perpendicular to the current
upstream and let the line drift back until it is straightens out and then start striping your line in. Shad on
the Fly recommends a figure 8 retrieve after your lines straightens out behind you. There is a video of the
on the website. Highly recommend you check out Shad on the Fly (shadonthefly.com) website for some
basic info on Shad fishing and flies to use. Wade Fly Fishing the Upper St. Johns River Basin for
American Shad is a book you can purchase on Amazon and it covers everything you need to know about
Shad fishing this area. This books has maps and shows where to fish.
I have attached a map of the area we will fish. The reason kayak are fishing in a different place is where
Joe wants to fish is 8 miles from the boat launch at James Bourbeau park so the power boat are going to
launch at the next boat ramp( Lake Pointsett Lodge on Lake Pointsett) to the South which is much
closer. The book Wade Fly Fishing the St Johns shows shad fishing spots about 3⁄4 mile just North of
where the kayaks will launch. I will attach a map to show all of this
If you would like to go and do not have a boat let me know as soon as you can so I can try and find you a
ride. The bass will start bedding at this time so bring you bass flies, if the shad fishing gets slow the bass
fishing may be good. I will try and get us all together Saturday night if possible. You need to make
reservation ASAP. If we cannot all get in the same area it may be hard to get together. I just made my reservation at the LaQuita inn at the Melbourne ext. Call me if you have any questions.
